UPCOMING EVENTS

THURSDAY 23RD JUNE 2022 – 12:30-14:30

Psychiatric drugs: The role of non-medical mental health professionals –  webinar

Hosted by BPS and led by Professor John Read, this webinar will summarise the effects of psychiatric drugs and the ‘Guidance for Psychological Therapists: Enabling conversation with clients taking or withdrawing from prescribed psychiatric drugs’.

Many/most mental health clients take psychiatric drugs.

These drugs, besides short term benefits for some, have a range of adverse effects, including hitherto unrecognised withdrawal effects.

Non-medical professionals are often reluctant to engage with clients on issues relating to their drugs.

A recent document has been developed, by the BPS and several other professional groups to encourage and facilitate informed, appropriate engagement with clients on these issues: ‘Guidance for Psychological Therapists: Enabling conversation with clients taking or withdrawing from prescribed psychiatric drugs’

There will be time to ask questions and discuss the ethical/professional issues involved in the session.

Tickets can be booked for £14.40 (at cost) here.
NB Members of BACP, UKCP and NCS will need to create an account with BPS Learn to book.

Did your training cover working with clients prescribed psychiatric drugs? This workshop will provide an opportunity to increase confidence in working with clients taking or withdrawing from such drugs through a deeper exploration of how and when they can intersect with the therapeutic journey. We will discuss case scenarios involving them in a variety of ways, with participants being invited to bring questions or case material around working with clients:
– thinking about taking a prescription
– the effects of such drugs on therapy
– thinking about coming off them or
– in the process of withdrawing from them

Psychiatric drug withdrawal – Friday 12th March 2021: Exploring the science of psychiatric drug withdrawal

Want to learn more about psychiatric drug withdrawal?  One of the endorsers of the guidance, the International Institute of Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal (IIPDW), along with Mad in America and the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry are pleased to announce a series of live, online ‘town hall’ discussions focusing on psychiatric drug withdrawal. Whilst these talks are not specifically aimed at psychological therapists many may find them of interest for themselves and potentially their clients.

Each town hall will feature a panel comprised of a mix of professionals and people with lived experience. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for viewer questions.

This series aims to explore what we do and don’t know about safe withdrawal from antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and stimulants. We will seek to present new understandings that are emerging from the professional and lived-experience communities, and address questions of interest to both prescribers and patients alike.
